Steel Drums

Music is the most effective remedy to relieve the soul from the heartaches of life. There is something about the strings of notes and melody that captivates the listeners and sends them to the world of fantasy.

You can serenade someone with a classical guitar. You can rock the world with your traditional drums and deliver a symphonic madness with a grand piano. But how about those people who do not want to go for the traditional? You can still enjoy the world of music because of the steelband family. The group of instruments is composed of quadraphonic, cello, six pan, steel drums and so much more. The steel pan originated from Trinidad and Tobago and is made of a drum that usually contains oil. It is categorized under the idiophone family and this seemingly peculiar instrument has actually been used since 1780’s. That makes the steel drum or steel pan a historic and antique musical instrument then.

Closer to My Dream

It seems there is no more stopping me from attending the songwriting camp. I am preparing hard by writing songs in advance. The guest speakers there are the biggest in the industry that’s why I’m both nervous and excited to meet them. I have also been thinking if I need fat burners to be able to make a better impression.

Just this week, I received a call that they are already arranging our airline tickets. This is going to be the first time for me to ride an airplane. I hope we will have a smooth ride and there’ll be no storm the day we leave. lol!  Wish me luck!

Anxiously Waiting for Audition Results

Tomorrow I will finally know the result of my audition.  If I pass, it would be the biggest thing that will happen to me.  I will be rubbing elbows with the biggest names in the Philippine songwriting business including great singers like Gary Valenciano in a four-day songwriting seminar.  I was nervous during the audition but I know I did my best.  Anyway, if I don’t make it then there’s always next year.  Still, I hope God will provide me with this wonderful opportunity.  I have been waiting for opportunities like this all my life and I hope it will finally be given to me.

Practice

Practice

It’s been a long time since I had an interview – not to mention an audition! So this week I have been practicing the songs that were assigned for the big day. There was mp3 and music sheet included so I at least have an idea of how the song was arranged and also know the chords that will be used. Just need to play it a few more times to be confident on the audition day. I normally play relaxed but I might stumble and tremble when I know that the likes of musical director Mel Villena is watching and criticizing! Looks like I’ll have to keep the porch lights on all night tonight for my last night of practice. God bless me and may I bless God in return!

Back in the music ministry?

Back in the music ministry?

I have been a part of the music ministry before, and I have been planning to get back to it again.  I wanted to give back to God the talent that He has so graciously given me.  I have been looking for opportunities to join the music team, and have not seen one until recently.  While others are worried about the side effects of diet pills, I wanted to give my spiritual life more – life. Good thing that our church has opened it’s doors for new musicians!  Of course I immediately saved the date and yes I attended the orientation.  They have scheduled an audition for everyone that was interested and gave us songs to practice.  I’ve been practicing the song, and have been practicing the life of a music minister.  If it be the will of God for me to serve him again, then let it be. Here is an old pic of me when I was younger and was serving as a church musician at a local church.

Finally got my Guitar.

Finally got my Guitar.

After waiting for almost a month, the time has come to finally meet with my friend that brought the guitar from US.  I was too excited that day, like a kid I couldn’t sleep at all.  J and Z tagged along, it was at a gig by Muffin band, in Cubao Expo.  We got there early.  When they arrived immediately he handed over the guitar case and told me to check out the guitar, and when I opened – it was even better than the pictures.  It had some blemishes – but all in all – she was a beauty.  Now that I’ve played with it for a while, I am beginning to understand that with great sound comes fragility.  The solid sitka spruce top looks easily scratchable, which led me to think are there cheap insurance for guitars?  In any case – I’m now a proud owner of a handmade Martin & Co dreadnought.  Here’s a pic of the guitar side by side with my son’s classical practice guitar.
