Furniture Delivery

If I haven’t mentioned it yet, my father-in-law has a furniture store, and my wife and I are hoping to someday have our own as well. We actually have the funds to start it – but we are currently building up an online furniture store first, to build our knowledge before we take the plunge. We also need to build our social network reach and maybe buy email lists so we can reach more potential customers.

Last Saturday, I was tasked to monitor the delivery and assembly of 35 teacher’s tables at a nearby school. I was told that it could take long, because it is hard to assemble the tables. Instead of taking my precious rest – I accepted the task knowing that this is a much needed 1st hand experience with actual furniture delivery and on-site assembly.

I was supposed to go with my wife, but she woke up having an unsightly insect bite on her eyelids so I had to go alone. Thankfully my eldest son Z accompanied me. Here is a picture of him as he was helping supervise the assembly.

When we got to the school, they gave us a spot of which to work on. And so I thought everything will go smoothly, but things got a bit complicated. It turns out the school did not have enough man power to take the cabinets to the rooms at the 2nd and 3rd floor, and so I had to ask the assemblers to carry the heavy boxes and build the cabinets close to the room where it is needed. Instead of just assembling they had to carry do heavy manual labor, thankfully they complied well and did their part without much complaining.

Aside from having to bring the tables up, we also had some quality problems with certain tables. Thankfully we had a spare that we can get parts from to fix them, unfortunately it wasn’t enough, so the assemblers ended up having to replace some of the tables the next day.

It was tiring but it was enlightening – I realized that ensuring quality, delivering goods, talking to the customer and trying to sell other furniture is not as easy as I imagined it to be. To learn more, I have already agreed to helping the store out in other big deliveries, as long as it happens on a weekend.
